Let's Talk About - Ice Melt

Posted: Nov 28, 2019

It happens every year; the snow falls and the constant freezing and thawing temperatures lead to the inevitable ice build-up; and when you’re responsible for managing areas used by your clients, friends andfamily, it's important that these areas are kept clean and safe. At BrettYoung, we understand that every property is different and they each have their own set of needs. That is why we carry a line-up of products that can help in many slippery situations.

The Science

When granules of Ice Melt contact ice or snow, they begin to form a brine solution on the ground. The brine solution that forms is vital to the melting process as it does not freeze immediately in extremely cold temperatures. The brine then works it’s way throught the snow and ice, breaking the bond between that and the concrete or pavement.  This process allows for easy removal of stubborn snow and ice. The length of this process usually depends on timing and the amount of ice melt applied, the frequency you are using the product and the overall quality of the product used. If you are unsure about application rates for your Ice Melt products, our BrettYoung sales reps are always available to answer any questions.

Timing is everything

Although having the right product is crucial to avoid slips and falls, it's also equally as important to know when to apply it, as timing is also key to keep ice buildup under control. During a dry powdery snowfall, you may find that all you need is a quick sweep or shovel but during wet heavy snow it's important to apply as soon as wet, heavy snow begins falling to prevent it from bonding. When more than two inches accumulate, shovel excess snow and reapply if necessary. A good rule of thumb is anytime the accumulated snowfall is more than two inches, plow or shovel first. Then use ice melter to melt the stubborn layer of ice or hard-packed snow that remains. Applying ice melt this way will ensure you get the results you need at the efficiency you need them.

Making your decision

When beginning your decision-making process, its important to consider the climate in which you live. Not all ice melt is createdequal and therefore it is especially important to know what you are buying. If you think your ice melt isn’t working, try checking the label, its possible the main ingredients aren’t strong enough for your climate. If you're unsure of what type of ice melt will work best for our individual needs, ask your local BrettYoung sales rep for their recommendations.

You may also want to consider the effects ice melt may have on turf and other plant life, children, and pets. A recurring problem with options like Rock Salt is it has a bad reputation of being quite harsh on the environment. It can burn turf and damage vegetation, cause corrosion on vehicles and machines if contact is made. The key to reducing environmental impact is to use a product with properly sized granules, a marker colour to allow targeted application and products with performance enhancers reducing the amount required.

In situations that require the safest and most environmentally considerate products, BrettYoung knows we have a responsibility to protect the turf you work hard at all season long. For this reason, we’ll recommend a couple of products to help you safeguard your property.  If you’re looking for a product that is guaranteed to be safer for you, your family and your property we suggest looking for products that have a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA's) Safer Choice label. This designation is given to products that are made with safer chemical ingredients without sacrificing quality or performance.

Recently given this designation, is Firestorm™ ice melt. Once applied, this top performer will melt ice down to -25 °C, works immediately, and doesn’t stop until every particle is dissolved.

If you’re looking for a natural and eco-friendly alternative to traditional ice melt, we suggest, Natural Choice™ ice melter which provides top ice melting performance while minimizing its environmental impact.  This natural ice melt option can melt ice in temperatures as low as -22°C and due to its unique organic coating, it can melt ice faster and at lower temperatures.

With whichever ice melt product you decide you need, our BrettYoung reps are always available to answer any of your product and application questions.
