Forage and Turf Seed Production Market Update

Growing forage and turf seed is a great way not only to diversify the risk and spread out your farm workload, but to also be able to take advantage of two separate uses from a single field – income from the seed crop, and also the straw and forage regrowth that is produced as a by-product in some crops.

While it may seem like an uncertain step to take, BrettYoung’s Seed Production Specialists are here to help you get started, and the market is ready for new seed growers. Currently there are many forage and turf markets that are undersupplied, due in large part to drought affected production regions and a contraction in seed production acreage. This reality is coupled with the fact that demand for these species has risen.

Turf seed (such as perennial ryegrass, tall fescue and creeping red fescue) consumption remains brisk as many homeowners turned to tending their lawns and backyards where they have been stuck at home due to Covid. As well, municipalities have increasingly recognized the value of public greenspaces and continue to invest in their development. Turfgrass remains a key component in these projects.

On the forage side, this past summer has affected seed production yields of many forage species placing a strain on seed supplies. Many established hay and pasture stands had low productivity affecting feed stocks, and in some areas, seedling fields may fail to establish and require reseeding, likely creating end-use demand above normal levels.

With the market perfectly set for new growers to join, BrettYoung’s Seed Grower Partnership Program makes contracting forage and turf seed even more lucrative.  Grow seed and save with seed stock discounts, loyalty contract premiums, cash rebates on crop input purchases and early delivery.
