Innovations

Forages have been a core crop for BrettYoung for a number of years. BrettYoung is a leader in many areas of the forage business including production acres, amount processed, packaging capability and genetic access. The areas we focus on include harvest management, genetics, coatings, equipment, and PGPR.

Growers are keen to find solutions to quality issues and maximizing seed production in alfalfa and forage grass seed production. BrettYoung will work with selected growers in 2009 to evaluate benefits in this area. In 2008 BrettYoung introduced Pod Ceal DC for canola direct cutting to assist growers with direct cutting options. We will continue to work with growers for solutions to managing their harvest with Pod Ceal DC on canola and will expand to other additional crops in 2009. These crops will include peas, lentils, and edible beans. There is much to learn when looking at a new concept for production. We will work with growers and retails to share and improve the adaptation for this technology.

Forage genetics continue to change and BrettYoung is committed to keeping the best options for our customers in the line up. BrettYoung is tied to a primary breeder Dairyland for hybrid alfalfa and is in fact the only company marketing hybrid alfalfa in Canada. These genetic options are also part of our production contracting program. Not only do we sell forage seed but we also work with growers in providing more crop production options.

BrettYoung is proud of the introduction of our bacteria to the canola market with our patented product BioBoost. Our slogan for BioBoost is “Building Better Crops”. We are currently developing BioBoost options for multiple crops and will be marketing BioBoost on alfalfa in the U.S. starting in the fall of 2009.

Adding value to the seed has been a focus for BrettYoung for a number of years. In fact BrettYoung leads the industry in Canada with coatings. 100% of our canola is now treated with Ultracoat and we are moving quickly to coatings on more of our forage products with Ultracoat as well. Seed coated forages improve flow, safety and assist the emergence. BrettYoung now owns a treating facility in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan to assist with the quality application of our seed applied products.

BrettYoung cleans and processes a high volume of forages at its facilities in Winnipeg MB, Gilbert Plains MB, and Rycroft AB. Our facilities include state of the art equipment for efficient processing and packaging. Recent upgrades include automated bagging for large and small bagging.

When you think forages think about BrettYoung. BrettYoung is a company with great products and innovative ways to add value in the market.
