Canola is a dynamic crop that has undergone multiple changes in the past number of years. BrettYoung is focused on growth through innovation which means a crop like canola is high on our priority list. Some areas of focus for us include harvest management, improvements in genetics, value expansion with bacteria products, as well as seed enhancements.
Growers are keen to consider harvest management for a few key reasons which include speed of swathing versus combining, increasing oil content, reducing green seed, and having the potential for higher yield. BrettYoung introduced Pod Ceal DC in the 2008 season with good results for most growers. We will continue to work with growers for solutions to managing their harvest with Pod Ceal DC on canola and will expand to other crops in 2009. These crops will include peas, lentils, and edible beans. There is a lot to learn when looking at a new concept for production. We will work with growers and retails to share and improve the adaptation for this technology.
Canola genetics have changed significantly during the past 15 years and will continue to be the major market force to canola change. BrettYoung is tied to a primary breeder DL Seeds to access great genetics for our customers. Yield improvements in the past year have now vaulted our genetics to the top of the pack for OPs, RR hybrids, CL hybrids, as well as hybrids (synthetic production). Research and product development for high oil, Sclerotinia and Clubroot are all on the radar for the product line with good success in all areas. BrettYoung is proud to be introducing our bacteria to the canola market with our patented product BioBoost. Our slogan for BioBoost is “Building Better Crops”. BioBoost helps to enhance the root development of the crop resulting in healthier roots. In many years a better root system will result in extra yield. Adding value to the seed has been a focus for BrettYoung for a number of years. In fact BrettYoung leads the industry with canola seed coatings. 100% of our canola is now treated with Ultracoat. This aids in a quicker emergence and a clean flowing seed resulting in accurate planting on the farm. In addition to Ultracoat we are now selling the combination of BioBoost on the seed. This one two punch gets our canola out of the ground fast. Yields have always been linked to good genetics and crops that are fast at coming out of the ground.
